This route dates back to 1949.
In the early 1990s, the route was withdrawn between Kingston and West Molesey, replaced by new route 411.
On 30 June 2007, the route was extended from Wimbledon to Tooting Broadway via route 57.
The 131 is renowned amongst Tootingites as being poorly vocalised by the automated text-to-speech program. The program, which informs users of the next bus stop approaching and the bus they are currently traveling on, seems to have difficulty saying "one" without appearing to be disabled.
It has generally been seen as a bad decision to extend the route from Wimbledon to Tooting Broadway, which has resulted in considerable delays, and bunching along the route, particularly towards Kingston. There are also two girls schools in the New Malden area that tend to monopolise the route during the mid afternoons on schooldays.
